The good health of the pregnant woman is essential for the correct development of the baby during the gestation process and breastfeeding. In addition to the corresponding medical tests, the future mother must also take care of her dental health.

This has been determined by the experts of the College of Dentists and Stomatologists of Valencia in the I Oral Health and Pregnancy Campaign, which seeks to inform pregnant women of the importance of going to the dentist.

We tell you why it is so importante the dentist during pregnancy and lactation.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes that women suffer also affect their oral health. The increase in estrogens and progestogens creates a favorable environment for cavities and gingivitis to appear, since the blood supply to the tissues of the mouth increases, which become more sensitive to external agents.

For that reason, the Doctor Enrique Llobell, president of the College of Dentists and Stomatologists, recommends that the future mother go to the dentist at least twice, especially during the third and sixth month of pregnancy.

If there are emergency cases, such as infections, cavities or other periodontal diseases, the expert assures that there is no problem to go to the dentist immediately, since dental treatments do not pose risks to the baby or the mother.

Once the pregnancy comes to an end and the birth occurs, oral health should not be neglected, neither in the mother nor in the newborn. Mothers should be careful of do not contaminate with your saliva pacifiers, bottles and baby spoons, as this fluid contains bacteria.

According to the guide published in the Oral Health and Pregnancy Campaign, children also require dental care. Therefore, once the first pieces come out, they must be cleaned with a pediatric brush or with gauze after meals and once they are one year old, go to the dentist for the first time. In addition, experts advise against leaving the baby lying down with the bottle, unless it contains water.
