The soft diet for children and babies

The soft diet is a non-irritating diet for the stomach. Its function is to facilitate digestion with the intake of light foods, which can be easily assimilated as they pass through the stomach.

The time we invest in digestion basically depends on the food we have eaten. The fastest digestions, which last approximately one hour, are those composed of liquids and plant foods.

On the other hand, when we eat foods with a lot of fat like red meat or lamb, fried eggs or foods highly seasoned or sweetened with sugars, we will need three hours or more to integrate the nutrients into the bloodstream.

The soft diet is a diet that is mechanically, chemically, physiologically and thermally non-irritating. To minimize digestion problems, not only the type of food that we are going to give to the children should be taken care of, but also the type of preparation. Thus, in the soft diet the food must be boiled, steamed, baked or grilled using a zero or minimal amount of oil to improve digestive tolerance.

Chili peppers, pepper, bell pepper and spices should be excluded when preparing meals for a bland diet. Desserts should also be excluded, with the exception of yogurts. And also, it is important to accompany food with plenty of liquids, but coffee and black tea (which are not recommended for children), chocolate and carbonated drinks should be avoided.

The soft diet is often prescribed for children with stomach problems. Thanks to this easily assimilated diet in a few days the stomach usually regains its normal balance. However, it also helps patients with peptic ulcer, ulcerative colitis, gastritis, mucous colitis, constipation, diarrhea, diverticulitis or diverticulosis and in diseases related to a malfunction of the gallbladder. It is also usually indicated after surgery, from the moment the patient begins to tolerate fluids.

It should be noted the importance of fluid replacement for the recovery of the child, since many of the stomach problems of children are associated with vomiting and diarrheal processes, which facilitate the loss of fluids and carries the consequent danger of dehydration. Therefore, to recover the loss of nutrients and mineral salts, it is important to carry out a good hydrolytic replacement by drinking hydrotonic solutions such as alkaline lemonade that is prepared with water, the juice of 1 lemon, 2 tablespoons of sugar or saccharin, a pinch of salt. and ½ tablespoon of baking soda.

Regarding the fiber in food, various studies have shown that dietary fiber does not generate overexertion or have an irritating effect on the mucosa of the intestine, but some children and adults may have problems with intestinal gas and a swollen belly (condition known as abdominal distention) , so it is necessary to modify the nutritional scheme to avoid discomfort.
